Nearly a third of Ghana’s 31 million people depend on agriculture and fishing for their livelihood. They’re among the poorest of the poor. A team of young entrepreneurs want to change that – and believe digital solutions can make a real difference.

Ghana has an abundance of natural resources. It’s one of the world’s largest producers of cocoa beans, soybeans and rice. And it has some of the richest fishing grounds in the world. Nonetheless, nearly half of Ghana’s people live in poverty. Farmers and fishers struggle to feed their families. In this edition of Founder’s Valley, we meet some young entrepreneurs and founders who are determined to help. And they’re convinced digital solutions – including apps, online marketing, and social media – can make a difference. In a country where only about half the population has access to the internet, can their ideas work? A film by Elisabeth Lehmann and Chrispin Mwashagha Mwakideu.

German University has hired a new assistant professor: Yuki, the robot.

Jürgen Handke is known as a pioneer of digital teaching methods. The German professor has an unusual assistant: a humanoid robot named Yuki. When students ask to speak to English language professor Jürgen Handke, they might encounter his robot assistant Yuki. The humanoid robot is 1.2 meters tall, very approachable and extremely knowledgeable. Professor Handke hopes his new assistant can help revolutionize German universities. For years, Handke has been using digital technologies to enhance his teaching: he has a YouTube channel with educational videos and an online platform where all students are registered. Robot lecturer Yuki can get a sense of how students are doing academically, and what kind of support they need. He can also have them take tests. Professor Handke insists Yuki is merely an assistant, and will never replace him as teacher. What do the students make the unusual assistant? DW’s Anna Goretzki spent a day accompanying robot lecturer Yuki at the University of Marburg.

The future of farming: Driverless tractors, drones and robots. How is the agriculture industry changing as digital technology develops?

Unmanned tractors controlled via GPS; drones that kill vermin in the fields from above; and highly efficient bull sperm used to produce genetically optimized calves. This is not science fiction. It’s the future of farming, today. “Smart farming” is the agricultural industry’s new buzzword. A survey of almost 600 German farmers has revealed that more than one in two now uses digital solutions to optimize their harvests. Fierce regional and global competition, declining subsidies, higher standards of food quality, environmental protection, and increasing demand are forcing farmers to be highly efficient. This documentary looks at three examples of “smart farming” in Germany. Breeding consultant Johanna Schendel creates optimized dairy cows by selecting the right bull semen. Asparagus farmer Heiner Bartels uses a smartphone to calculate the optimum time to harvest. And drone pilot Bernd Meyer is out to fight pests in maize fields from the air. All three are trying to use modern technology to modify nature to fit the needs of our society. But where are the limits?

In the digital world, everything we do involves data. Digital trust and cyber security are crucial for digital business. Who controls our digital identity?

The bits and bytes can serve our interests or be used against us. More than ever before, we have to trust computer systems. In terms of internet usage and social media penetration, Thailand is growing faster than nearly any other nation. How do its startups deal with personal data, privacy settings and cyber security? Our digital data can help or harm us. Without digital trust there can be no digital business. As the digital revolution unfolds, whether we like it or not, we leave behind trails of data. It has become nearly impossible to remain anonymous. Using algorithms, scientists and businesses can now interpret ever larger amounts of information about us. ‘Big Data’ is being utilized in new ways – to make our lives easier and solve our problems, but also to earn money with our personal information. In terms of internet usage and social media penetration, Thailand is growing at an incredible pace. According to a recent survey, Thais spend an average 9.38 hours per day online, but privacy and data protection are not widely discussed in the country. Young people in particular tend to trust more in technology than in political institutions. Our Founders’ Valley host looks at how startups deal with personal data and cyber security. How is social media changing us and the societies we build? And how can we retain control of our digital identity while continuing to reap the benefits?

As artificial intelligence improves, machines could soon replace us in the workplace. Are robots set to take over? Part 1: https://youtu.be/6IOH7b68byk

Society is facing radical changes. Industry 4.0 – the fourth industrial revolution – is the current trend of automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies. Artificial intelligence is constantly gaining ground.

The digital era and the Internet are not just changing industrial production processes. An increasing number of jobless people are facing stiff competition from intelligent machines. One software company owner in the US even says the machines are better designed to do most jobs than people are. And that isn’t just restricted to the car industry. Workers cost money and employers are out to minimize labor costs.

What will that mean? Soon there could be more intelligent robots and machines than humans and they could soon be replacing people in the workplace. Industry 4.0 poses a great challenge to the world as we know it and millions of people could lose out in the process. Find out more in ‘Robitics – Impacting the Workplace’.
