What does the future of education look like in a wired world? In this film, Indian education expert Sugata Mitra conducts a daring experiment. In an Indian village, he builds a school that only exists virtually, in the cloud.

In many parts of the world, just getting to the nearest school is a long and sometimes dangerous undertaking. For many children, that means that attending school is nearly impossible.
Sugat Mitra’s experiment seeks to address this. His idea? Converting a kiosk in an Indian village into a school that children can attend at any time. It‘s a school with computers instead of books. Using the internet, children can contact and learn from people all over the world. Or they can learn independently, without adult supervision. This documentary follows the project as it evolves. How will these children respond to the Internet the very first time they encounter it? Will this school help them change the course of their future?

With the help of mRNA technology, BioNTech has developed a vaccine for COVID-19. These assist the body to produce its own antigens to fight the virus – a medical milestone.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, scientists Uğur Şahin und Özlem Türeci have pursued the goal of creating cancer treatments that are specific to individuals. The firm they established, BioNTech, focuses heavily on revolutionary mRNA technology.

The “M” in mRNA means messenger and RNA stands for ribonucleic acid. MRNA delivers information for antigen production directly to the cell which produces proteins. Afterwards, these cells present self-produced antigens on their outer shells and trigger a specifically desired immune response.

Şahin and Türeci came up with the idea of using mRNA technology for vaccines in January 2020 after reading about a virus recently identified in Wuhan, China. Within hours, BioNTech decided to launch its search for a viable vaccine. The initial steps required lots of money and nerves of steel. The founders of pharmaceutical giant Hexal, brothers Andreas and Thomas Strünmann, were among the first financial backers.

BioNTech received hundreds of millions in funding and the search for a vaccine began. But many questions remained unresolved. In the end, persistence paid off. A Partnership with Pharma Giant Pfizer sped up the testing phase and the Comirnaty Concentrate was approved. Its efficacy proven, millions around the world have been vaccinated with it.

But what does the future look like for cancer research? And can mRNA technology aid in the fight against Malaria? The documentary shows what a wide-ranging affect this startup company in Mainz, Germany is having on global health. Film maker Michael Schindhelm has gained the opportunity to take a closer look at this revolutionary company.

Green hydrogen produces zero emissions and many believe it holds the key to limiting global warming. So is it the big hope for the future or a multi-billion euro mistake?

Many believe green hydrogen could provide a miracle solution for countries around the world seeking to decarbonize their economies. But the technology is still in its infancy. Generating sufficient quantities of green hydrogen would require a lot more renewable energy than is currently available. Right now, almost all hydrogen is produced using natural gas in a process that generates large amounts of carbon dioxide. Green hydrogen, by contrast, is climate neutral. It’s derived using renewable energy. The principle itself is not new but has, at yet, only found limited usage.
Engineers at the German Aerospace Center are now working with the world’s largest artificial sun to try to produce hydrogen without any electricity at all, using only light. If they can succeed, it would allow large-scale production of this valuable gas in countries that receive a lot of sunshine. Hydrogen is already being used as a fuel for buses, trains and cars, with hydrogen-powered planes due to follow shortly. Hydrogen is even the fuel of choice for space rockets, and German submarines glide along almost in silence thanks to hydrogen fuel cells. Manufacturers of airplanes, trucks, and even steel are investing millions in the technology, hoping that hydrogen will be the go-to fuel of a climate-neutral future. But critics warn of major challenges ahead, saying billions stand to be wasted.

New viruses and diseases, previously found only in tropical climates, are reaching Europe. Researchers in a high-security lab on the Baltic Sea island of Riems are working to put a stop to these dangerous viruses.

The Friedrich Loeffler Institute on the island of Riems can only be reached via a single bridge. The island lies in the Baltic Sea, and its isolated location is vital: Dangerous viruses are stored here, including Ebola, Rabies, Swine Fever, Crimean-Congo Fever and Sars-CoV-2.

The facility is one of only three such laboratories in the world – and the only one in Europe – where dangerous diseases can be researched using live animals such as cattle and pigs under high-security conditions. Researchers are working to understand how new pathogens spread, and to develop vaccines. It’s a race against time, as viruses have long since come to have enormous global consequences.

African Swine Fever is on the rise in Eastern Europe. In Germany, wild boars were found dead of ASF for the first time in the fall of 2020. It’s vital to stop the further spread of the disease. So far in Germany, its rampant spread has been limited to wild pigs, but there is a high risk that the virus will begin to affect pig farms.

An outbreak in Germany, the world’s third-largest pork producer, would be an economic disaster. Now, a promising potential vaccine is being tested in Riems. It could prove to be a life-saving solution.

Green tech could help to clean our air, secure our food and protect our cities. An innovative plastic upcycling machine is one promising device made in Taiwan. But can technology really save the planet?

Sometimes it seems like a bad dream: floods, air pollution, traffic jams. Sometimes it feels like we’re surrounded by eco-monsters. But they can be defeated. YouTuber Alex Lin presents state-of-the-art devices. Arthur Zhang builds machines for upcycling plastics. And Japanese researchers are even working on mirrors in space.

DW presents: UNSEEN (Five-part documentary series)
Invisible guests in your food, your hometown sinking, unhealthy dust hiding in your lungs. Discover heroes with amazing solutions – and inspiration for a better life!

UNSEEN opens your eyes. We travel through Southeast Asia and discover stories about people whose lives could be yours. In Indonesia, children suffer from air pollution – something doctors, architects and entrepreneurs are fighting with innovative and original concepts. Then we head to Malaysia for an episode in learning how to deal with microplastics in food. We follow a fan of great cuisine on his own personal journey. What’s safe to eat and drink? Which products are good, and which don’t measure up? Next up is Thailand’s capital Bangkok, one of Asia’s sinking cities. Its inhabitants prepare for future floods, adapting their city and seeking tools to make their homes safe. In Vietnam we get caught in gridlock. Nothing new! But this time, we’re stuck with some cool rappers teaching people how not to go crazy in traffic. And finally, in Taiwan, it’s all about green tech. Learn about the hopes and limits of the new technologies being developed to solve life’s challenges. Join us on an exciting trip in five episodes – one that will open your eyes to beastly challenges and promising solutions!
