This four-part documentary series centers on eight individuals and their families. Each kept a diary recording their daily lives, experiences, thoughts, and feelings. Illustrations accompany the entries to bring them to life, giving these sequences the look of a graphic novel.

The eight diarists lived scattered across Germany. They came from different socioeconomic backgrounds, religions, and political factions. Some become fervent supporters of the Nazi regime, others opposed it, and some were marginalized or persecuted. Several of the journal span the entire 12 years of Hitler’s rule. But some fall silent after a given time. “Hitler’s Reich – A German Journal” features no expert testimonies; instead, the diaries stand alone, as personal records of the time in which they were written.

In the entries, we find descriptions of moments of happiness, youth, dance lessons, longing and love; but also of the first – still hesitant – Nazi salute, Gestapo surveillance, “Aryan certificates,” hunger, and the threat of deportation. They capture a time when many looked the other way, remained silent, or became complicit. They speak of what it felt like when the war “came home,” the fear of nights spent in bunkers, and the hope of survival. The diarists wrote with the urgency of the present, not knowing what tomorrow would bring. Their stories reflect the rise, reign, and eventual downfall of the Nazi regime.

Many jobs will disappear in the coming decades as a result of AI and automation. This could require a fundamental change in the human relationship to work.

In South Korea, many people work fourteen hours or more a day. The immense pressure to perform has an impact on family life and mental health. The country has the highest suicide rate in the world and stress-related cancers are common.

While government measures are intended to encourage South Koreans to reduce their working hours, many inhabitants of Kuwait must get through working day with the help of movies and books. The wealthy oil nation guarantees its inhabitants the right to a job – but there’s nowhere near enough work for everyone.

According to estimates, Artificial Intelligence and automation will replace a large proportion of the global workforce in the coming decades. So, it’s time to look for concepts for a post-work era. Based on interviews with people in Kuwait, Italy, the USA and South Korea, the film examines the human relationship to work and explores the question: What will we do, when we no longer have to work?

Flooding caused by heavy rainfall is a regular occurrence — and a consequence of climate change. Weather extremes are no longer limited to certain parts of the world: they’re now part of everyday life in Germany too.

Researchers from various disciplines are determined to fight climate change. At Kassel University in the German state of Hesse, for example, research is being carried out on a new method of producing concrete that is low in CO2 emissions.

In the neighboring city of Giessen, two researchers invented bioplastic – by chance. What began with a forgotten petri dish is now set to revolutionize the region’s packaging industry.

All these examples show how science is working hard to protect the climate. The film takes viewers into the laboratory — and explains the relevance of today’s research for how we’ll be living our lives tomorrow.

Cyberspace is less secure than ever before. Hackers exploit human error or technical loopholes to steal data — or publish it on the darknet, if the ransom demanded is not paid. It’s a practice wiith catastrophic consequences.

It can happen to anyone: Private individuals, companies, administrations, schools and even hospitals are falling victim to attacks by hackers. The media has been reporting on cybercrime for years and the trend is rising. Hackers are more powerful than ever – and always ready to exploit human error or technical vulnerabilities to penetrate the IT systems of companies, administrations or private individuals. Their tools include ransomware, i.e. malware that installs itself on a computer to lock it or encrypt data on it. Once this has been done, the criminals can steal the data. They then threaten to publish it on the darknet if the ransom demanded – in cryptocurrency, of course – is not paid. In the USA alone, the damage caused by cyberattacks in 2023 amounted to 12.5 billion dollars. An amount that, within two years, had more than doubled.

A report published by the European Union for Network and Information Security in late 2022 highlights the particular risks faced by the healthcare sector. In fact, thousands of hospitals worldwide have already been virtually attacked. One hospital in Israel, for example, made a virtue of necessity, filming and publishing its handling of the attack to prevent other hospitals from falling into the same trap.

In the film, victims and their relatives talk about how their lives have been impacted by cyberattacks. Company bankruptcies, loss of pension insurance, even suicide – the consequences can be fatal. In the film, viewers also hear from a hacker, who explains how straightforward it is to deprive people of their data.

Corona, AIDS and the Spanish flu have claimed many millions of lives. Now, researchers around the world are trying to better predict and prevent pandemics like these in the future.

A vet visits Klaus Hoffmann’s chicken coop with an assistant and a portable laboratory. The goal of the project is to detect ‘zoonoses’, infections that pass from animals to humans, at an early stage. These 40 chickens are Hoffmann’s great hobby. Today, they are being thoroughly checked for age, size, weight and viral load. The results of the chicken examination are later compared with health data from Hoffmann himself — and compared to data from Hoffmann’s dog, as well. The aim is to detect viruses, bacteria or parasites that could migrate from animal to human.

The coronavirus pandemic is highly likely to have been caused by such a zoonosis. Fabian Leendertz is researching this theory at the University of Greifswald. He specializes in a new field of research called “One Health”. This research field looks at how humans, animals and the environment interact in the spread of new viruses. Leendertz, who has worked on behalf of the World Health Organization (WHO) to trace the origin of the coronavirus, wants to stay two steps ahead of the next wave of infection. That means identifying viruses before they can become dangerous for us.

Ten of the world’s fastest growing economies are located on the African continent. Companies in the field of science and innovation are being promoted. Climate-friendly ideas for the future are already being realized in African countries.

Africa has the youngest, fastest-growing population of any continent. This is reflected in the innovative strength emanating from many African nations: young scientists in particular are being supported and are developing creative, climate-friendly strategies that have the potential to solve global problems.

At the same time, many African countries face immense challenges: political crises, wars, population growth and climate change. Solutions are being developed on a local level. In Kenya, for example, a team of young scientists has succeeded in using new technologies to reduce the price of animal feed production. Mobile communication solutions from Nairobi deliver knowledge and education in indigenous languages to the remotest regions of East Africa. Kenya and Uganda are already supplied with more than 90 per cent renewable energy. A young Afro-German entrepreneur in Kampala is taking advantage of this – he wants to expand e-mobility in private transport. The municipal healthcare system in Accra, Ghana, is already working with artificial intelligence developed in Africa.

However, climate change caused by industrialized nations in the northern hemisphere poses a particular threat to Africa. Of the almost 1.5 billion Africans from 54 countries, as many as 117 million people could be at risk from rising sea levels in 2030.

By 2100, Africa’s total population could be around 3.8 billion. One solution under consideration is to build a floating city in Lagos, Nigeria, that can adapt to the consequences of climate change.

All around the world, scientists are working to recreate lost animal species such as the mammoth. Using modern genetic techniques, they’re extracting ancient genetic material from museum exhibits. Do their efforts represent hope for the future of the natural world? Or is science playing God?

Findings in the thawed permafrost of Siberia have made it possible to reconstruct the DNA of mammoths. Researchers are now experimenting with inserting genes related to the ability to resist cold temperatures into the Asian elephant, which is related to the mammoth. The animals thus created could survive in the steppes of Siberia and Alaska.

In Australia, scientists have managed to extract the genetic material of marsupial wolves from preserved embryos in museums. The predator’s genes are replicated in the lab and implanted into the related marsupial mouse – in a bid to bring the extinct creature back to life.

And biotechnology could also help white rhinos in Africa: Researchers in Berlin are fertilizing eggs from the last two living females with sperm from deceased males frozen and preserved for decades.

However, these practices are also attracting criticism. Biology researchers question the usefulness of revived species for natural habitats. They fear that the excitement surrounding the idea of bringing back extinct species could distract people from the many problems that cause animals to disappear, in the first place. Are some scientists playing God – with unforeseeable consequences for the environment?

The intestine is a true marvel. This organ’s complex functions extend far beyond the mere processing of food. The intestine affects the immune system and also has a powerful effect on our emotional well-being.

If a person’s gut is doing well, that person is doing well. If the gut is doing poorly, however, it can lead to chronic inflammation — or depression. So, what can be done to protect and strengthen the gut?

This documentary follows people for whom the gut plays a special role in their lives. They speak openly about what is sometimes a taboo subject.

Jana Eberhart has a stressful everyday life. The student works as a model and is a passionate about sports. In fact, she’s about to take part in an Ironman competition. Can a change in diet strengthen her gut so that she can perform better? Sports and nutrition consultant Dr. Jens Freese accompanies Jana on her project over an extended period of time. What impact will dietary changes and other interventions have?

For actor and fitness influencer Philipp Stehler, careful management of the gut is essential. He lives with ulcerative colitis, a chronic intestinal inflammation condition. This disease almost cost him his life. His large intestine had to be surgically removed. Philipp Stehler talks openly about his life then and now. While his diet used to consist mainly of meat and protein shakes, he now eats a vegan diet and practices yoga and meditation every day.

Carina Speck has been living with irritable bowel syndrome or IBS for 13 years. Bloating, diarrhea and stomach cramps accompany her in everything she does. But the social media manager doesn’t want to isolate herself because of it. On Instagram and TikTok, she gives tips on things like traveling with IBS. Dr. Miriam Stengel from SRH Klinikum Sigmaringen guides her, with recommendations on how she can get a better handle on her symptoms.

All around the world, entrepreneurs and scientists are looking for a way out of factory farming. They’re concerned by the issue of animal welfare. But a primary motive is the ecological impact of industrial livestock farming.

Industrial livestock farming is responsible for around 15 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. It also requires huge amounts of land and water and is thought to be contributing to the rise in antibiotic-resistant infections in humans. This is why more and more scientists and entrepreneurs are conducting research on alternatives to conventional meat production.

In California, Joshua Tetrick is working on a method of growing meat in a bioreactor. He multiplies the muscle cells of chickens in huge tanks and cultivates them with plant-based nutrients. The resulting cell pulp is molded into fibrous meat with the help of a plant scaffold. A kilo still costs many hundreds of dollars. But Joshua Tetrick hopes that production can be scaled up to a globally relevant level. After all, with ‘Good Meat’ he was one of the first two companies in the USA to receive a license for cultured meat.

At the University of California, Alison Van Eenennaam is trying to make meat production more efficient. Using the gene editing tool CRISPR she’s altered the genetic make-up of a cow so that its offspring are exclusively male. This is a great advantage, as male calves grow faster and consume fewer resources than female calves to produce the same amount of meat – thereby reducing the carbon footprint of livestock farming.

For Pasi Vainikka from ‘Solar Foods’ in Helsinki, these are all just intermediate steps on the way to a truly sustainable future food: he’s cultivating a whole new category of food in gigantic fermenters: Bacteria that are fed with CO2 and hydrogen and blended to create a product called ‘Solein’. A flavorless, protein-rich basic ingredient that can replace eggs and milk in practically all foods.

Science journalist Ingolf Baur meets some of the researchers and entrepreneurs seeking alternatives to industrial livestock farming around the world.
