All around the world, entrepreneurs and scientists are looking for a way out of factory farming. They’re concerned by the issue of animal welfare. But a primary motive is the ecological impact of industrial livestock farming.

Industrial livestock farming is responsible for around 15 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. It also requires huge amounts of land and water and is thought to be contributing to the rise in antibiotic-resistant infections in humans. This is why more and more scientists and entrepreneurs are conducting research on alternatives to conventional meat production.

In California, Joshua Tetrick is working on a method of growing meat in a bioreactor. He multiplies the muscle cells of chickens in huge tanks and cultivates them with plant-based nutrients. The resulting cell pulp is molded into fibrous meat with the help of a plant scaffold. A kilo still costs many hundreds of dollars. But Joshua Tetrick hopes that production can be scaled up to a globally relevant level. After all, with ‘Good Meat’ he was one of the first two companies in the USA to receive a license for cultured meat.

At the University of California, Alison Van Eenennaam is trying to make meat production more efficient. Using the gene editing tool CRISPR she’s altered the genetic make-up of a cow so that its offspring are exclusively male. This is a great advantage, as male calves grow faster and consume fewer resources than female calves to produce the same amount of meat – thereby reducing the carbon footprint of livestock farming.

For Pasi Vainikka from ‘Solar Foods’ in Helsinki, these are all just intermediate steps on the way to a truly sustainable future food: he’s cultivating a whole new category of food in gigantic fermenters: Bacteria that are fed with CO2 and hydrogen and blended to create a product called ‘Solein’. A flavorless, protein-rich basic ingredient that can replace eggs and milk in practically all foods.

Science journalist Ingolf Baur meets some of the researchers and entrepreneurs seeking alternatives to industrial livestock farming around the world.

One way to tackle e-waste is to repair devices rather than throw them out. More companies are doing just that, from recycling solar modules to renting out second-hand smartphones. Their goal is to reduce e-waste and protect the environment.

Experts predict that by 2030, more than one million tons of solar modules will end up as waste in Germany alone. With his company 2ndlifesolar in Hamburg, engineer Martin Wilke wants to ensure that as many of these discarded modules as possible are recycled, for example as a small-scale solar panel system on a balcony. The company also recycles the raw materials in the discarded modules, such as silver and silicon.

And in the French city of Strasbourg, Elie Assémat is working to eliminate e-waste altogether. He’s the co-founder of the cooperative Commown, which has been renting out smartphones, computers, and headphones since 2018. Assémat is primarily concerned with sustainability and promoting product longevity.

India, meanwhile, has become a dumping ground for e-waste from all over the world, including illegal waste from Europe. Tens of thousands of people make a living from processing and reselling e-waste under dangerous working conditions. Swiss environmental scientist Dea Wehrli wants to tackle the problem with a project called E(co)work. It allows Indian scrap metal workers to rent a work or storage space that is safe and in line with regulations.

Sea levels are rising due to climate change. Many coastal cities are at growing risk of flooding. Architects are trying to react to this development with new ideas, such as floating cities. But this concept is not without its problems.

Architect Koen Olthuis is constructing a floating city in the Maldives, sustainably cooled with sea water. In the Netherlands, Sacha and Jan live in a waterborne section of the Steigereiland neighborhood. It’s based on a complicated feat of engineering – but also depends on cooperation and solidarity. If one home is too heavy, it raises the one next door. Yet Sacha and Jan like its collaborative nature. The residents of the floating neighborhood all love living by the water, not far from the heart of Amsterdam.

In Germany, a University of Kiel project goes even further. Biologist Martina Mühl is researching the possibility of implementing aquaculture very close to home, so residents can tap their own fresh local supply of fish and seafood.

Hamburg and Bremen have been responding to rising tides by constructing ever higher levees. But soon even this will no longer be enough to cope with the growing impact of climate change. This documentary shows possible alternatives to levees and how we might be able to cope with the rising sea levels in the future.

Green tech could help to clean our air, secure our food and protect our cities. An innovative plastic upcycling machine is one promising device made in Taiwan. But can technology really save the planet?

Sometimes it seems like a bad dream: floods, air pollution, traffic jams. Sometimes it feels like we’re surrounded by eco-monsters. But they can be defeated. YouTuber Alex Lin presents state-of-the-art devices. Arthur Zhang builds machines for upcycling plastics. And Japanese researchers are even working on mirrors in space.

DW presents: UNSEEN (Five-part documentary series)
Invisible guests in your food, your hometown sinking, unhealthy dust hiding in your lungs. Discover heroes with amazing solutions – and inspiration for a better life!

Keeping your kids safe from air pollution / UNSEEN (1/5): https://youtu.be/KrsGQpSv5Co
How to avoid microplastics in your food / UNSEEN (2/5): https://youtu.be/acMYHAmNLlE
Fighting the floods: how not to lose your city / UNSEEN (3/5): https://youtu.be/9BTrzAGhy8U
How to cope with traffic jams (without going crazy) / UNSEEN (4/5): https://youtu.be/Hh1Do3PQCWA
How technology makes life easier – and what’s still up to you / UNSEEN (5/5): https://youtu.be/EJi3Vxdyqv0

UNSEEN opens your eyes. We travel through Southeast Asia and discover stories about people whose lives could be yours. In Indonesia, children suffer from air pollution – something doctors, architects and entrepreneurs are fighting with innovative and original concepts. Then we head to Malaysia for an episode in learning how to deal with microplastics in food. We follow a fan of great cuisine on his own personal journey. What’s safe to eat and drink? Which products are good, and which don’t measure up? Next up is Thailand’s capital Bangkok, one of Asia’s sinking cities. Its inhabitants prepare for future floods, adapting their city and seeking tools to make their homes safe. In Vietnam we get caught in gridlock. Nothing new! But this time, we’re stuck with some cool rappers teaching people how not to go crazy in traffic. And finally, in Taiwan, it’s all about green tech. Learn about the hopes and limits of the new technologies being developed to solve life’s challenges. Join us on an exciting trip in five episodes – one that will open your eyes to beastly challenges and promising solutions!
