Astrophysicist Gernot Grömer wants to promote space travel. So he founded the Austrian Space Forum. Grömer sees himself as a “shipbuilder” who’s working on making the journey to Mars possible in 20 to 30 years.

To this end, he conducts analog missions here on Earth. For these, scientists known as analog astronauts practice for the journey to the Red Planet, collecting knowledge along the way. AMADEE-24 is the name of the current mission, which will take place in 2024 in cooperation with the Armenian Space Agency in the Ararat region, an environment with Mars-like geology.

The film accompanies the mission through its highs and lows. However, the Austrian Space Forum and its many volunteers are not only practicing for the colonization of Mars. Under the direction of Gernot Grömer, they are also working on a nanosatellite that searches for space debris. Space may be infinite, but the Earth’s nearby orbits now resemble a large garbage dump.

Europe must keep a foot in the door, rather than leaving the space race up to China and the USA: That’s the goal of Augsburg rocket engineer Stefan Brieschenk. He founded the Rocket Factory Augsburg in 2018. He’s working hard, both here and in the far north of Sweden, on a rocket that will soon launch satellites into space from Europe — at an unbeatable price. The Rocket Factory recycles items from other industrial sectors, including tanks from the brewing industry.

A film that sheds light on the opportunities and risks inherent to the business of space.

The International Space Station (ISS) is a unique venture. It is the largest project in space the world has ever seen. Since its first component was launched into orbit on 20 November, 1998, the ISS has experienced both highs and lows.

This documentary explores the singular historical situation that made the construction of the ISS possible and hears firsthand from crew members from various nations. It sheds light on the challenges that ISS crews have faced over the years, such as the fact that, for a long time, female astronauts were unable to carry out space walks because there were no suitable space suits available for women. The films also shows how space can be deeply affected by political crises, as events such as the war in Ukraine have been felt in the confined spaces of the ISS. Nonetheless, the International Space Station is proof that nations can work together towards incredible common goals – not for nothing has it been called “humankind’s most valuable machine”. But the end fast approaching. The project was supposed to end in 2024, until the US government agreed to continue operating the ISS until 2030. In 2031, the space station is due to be brought back to Earth using a controlled process of de-orbiting.

In February 2021, the robot “Perseverance” landed successfully on Mars. However, this success was never a given. The film shows the difficult work involved in developing the robot, right up to its successful landing.

The new robot NASA sent to Mars is called “Perseverance”. Its mission? To search for evidence of past life on the Red Planet – an important and ambitious endeavor. It took years to design the space probe and its small helicopter drone, called “Ingenuity”. This documentary follows the rover’s development, right up to its landing in the Jezero Crater on February 18, 2021.

The mission proved to be a complete success: the robot landed safely and all the instruments on board functioned smoothly. As a result, “Perseverance” was able to deliver high-resolution images of Mars. But getting there was an arduous journey for all involved.

On site, “Perseverance” takes samples from the crater, which scientists believe was once a river delta. Geological traces of past life – so-called biosignatures – could be hidden in the rock. Eventually, these samples will be brought back to Earth for analysis. Among other things, they could provide insights into possible life on Mars.

The four-pound mini-helicopter “Ingenuity”, which traveled in the belly of the rover, is now carrying out a series of test flights. These are the first of their kind to be undertaken on another planet. Another task of “Perseverance” is to test an innovative technology for extracting oxygen from the atmosphere. It is hoped that the gas can be used as fuel — or to supply oxygen for future manned flights to Mars.

Are we facing a golden digital age or will robots soon run the world? We need to establish ethical standards in dealing with artificial intelligence – and to answer the question: What still makes us as human beings unique?

Mankind is still decades away from self-learning machines that are as intelligent as humans. But already today, chatbots, robots, digital assistants and other artificially intelligent entities exist that can emulate certain human abilities. Scientists and AI experts agree that we are in a race against time: we need to establish ethical guidelines before technology catches up with us. While AI Professor Jürgen Schmidhuber predicts artificial intelligence will be able to control robotic factories in space, the Swedish-American physicist Max Tegmark warns against a totalitarian AI surveillance state, and the philosopher Thomas Metzinger predicts a deadly AI arms race. But Metzinger also believes that Europe in particular can play a pioneering role on the threshold of this new era: creating a binding international code of ethics.

——————————————————————–
