Revolution in medicine – BioNTech, mRNA and the Covid-19 vaccine |

With the help of mRNA technology, BioNTech has developed a vaccine for COVID-19. These assist the body to produce its own antigens to fight the virus – a medical milestone.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, scientists Uğur Şahin und Özlem Türeci have pursued the goal of creating cancer treatments that are specific to individuals. The firm they established, BioNTech, focuses heavily on revolutionary mRNA technology.

The “M” in mRNA means messenger and RNA stands for ribonucleic acid. MRNA delivers information for antigen production directly to the cell which produces proteins. Afterwards, these cells present self-produced antigens on their outer shells and trigger a specifically desired immune response.

Şahin and Türeci came up with the idea of using mRNA technology for vaccines in January 2020 after reading about a virus recently identified in Wuhan, China. Within hours, BioNTech decided to launch its search for a viable vaccine. The initial steps required lots of money and nerves of steel. The founders of pharmaceutical giant Hexal, brothers Andreas and Thomas Strünmann, were among the first financial backers.

BioNTech received hundreds of millions in funding and the search for a vaccine began. But many questions remained unresolved. In the end, persistence paid off. A Partnership with Pharma Giant Pfizer sped up the testing phase and the Comirnaty Concentrate was approved. Its efficacy proven, millions around the world have been vaccinated with it.

But what does the future look like for cancer research? And can mRNA technology aid in the fight against Malaria? The documentary shows what a wide-ranging affect this startup company in Mainz, Germany is having on global health. Film maker Michael Schindhelm has gained the opportunity to take a closer look at this revolutionary company.

All over the globe, digital transformation is opening new paths for women. In Indonesia, more and more are taking the opportunities for independence it offers to open a business. But how do young founders cope with the challenges posed by the role?

All have had to overcome hurdles thrown up by traditional structures, widely accepted clichés and investors who prefer to bet on men. In Indonesia, young women founders face off with tradition and investors who want men in Charge. Women are in traditionally in charge of many things on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, which is home to the largest matriarchal society in the world. For centuries, the three million members of the Minangkabau people there have revered the ‘Power of the Mother’ – an exception in a country shaped largely by Islam. But the digital revolution has moved the goalposts closer for many women, and more and more are taking up the mantle of leadership at companies. Our host sets out from Berlin on a journey to Indonesia to discover how young women startup founders are breaking traditional clichés about roles. Among them are a young programmer whose family had very different expectations of their daughter, a Muslim businesswoman who doesn’t question the notion of a freedom for women who have to cover themselves from head to toe, and a founder who is trying to connect traditions with the fast-paced 21st century digital world.

The 2008 financial crisis spread distrust in banks and sped up the acceptance of new kinds of money. Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin now promise to provide transparent, democratic alternatives. Startups in the Philippines are disrupting old structures.

More than 50 million Filipinos are unbanked. FinTech startups are now giving them access to money. With little access to formal banking services, millions in the Philippines can’t save money, take out loans or perform other simple financial transactions. Now FinTech startups are raising levels of financial inclusion. Founders here believe the country is ripe for change, and that cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin will provide the momentum. Blockchain ambassador Lina Seiche, the founder of Blockchats, is working for change through bitcoin and decentralized networks. SCI founder Miguel Cuneta is helping that change along by offering services like bill payment, e-commerce, cashless transactions, and of course, cryptocurrency wallets. He’s enabling people in the unbanked market – like waste-pickers – by helping them participate in the world of digital commerce. Founder David Kath is aiding them as well by eliminating middlemen in the plastic industry with technology that allows waste-pickers to triple incomes. Turned into digital tokens in an e-wallet, plastic has become their money.

In terms of internet usage and social media penetration, Thailand is growing faster than nearly any other nation. How do its startups deal with personal data, privacy settings and cyber security?
