How can we preserve our current flood of knowledge, data and objects for future generations? What is important, and what can go? The better storage options become, the more difficult it is to answer this question.

We humans like to preserve everything, whether we’ve collected or created it. Be it sourdough starters, books or blood samples. We want to preserve objects, memories and even microorganisms.

Karl de Smedt is the only sourdough librarian in the world. In St. Vith, Belgium, he keeps 144 sourdough starters from all over the globe, some of which are over 100 years old. Through his collection, he preserves the unique wild yeasts and microorganisms that create each sourdough.

The German National Library in Leipzig and Frankfurt preserves copies of all books, records and media published in or about Germany since 1913. There are 34 million physical media on the shelves. Digitization can solve the space problem, but also has its pitfalls. For example: data has to be constantly copied, as hard disks can become unusable.

Prof. Robert Grass from ETH Zurich is developing a particularly promising storage medium: DNA storage. It is extremely powerful, can be stored for over 1,000 years and can always be read. Data is converted into the DNA code and stored as artificial DNA.

BioBank Dresden stores tumor samples, blood, urine and cerebrospinal fluid for research purposes. Evidence from criminal offenses is stored in the evidence room of the public prosecutor’s office in Frankfurt am Main. This allows crimes to be re-analyzed using modern techniques and solved decades later.

Will artificial intelligence save us or kill us all? In Japan, AI-driven technology promises better lives for an aging population. But researchers in Silicon Valley are warning of untamable forces being unleashed– and even human extinction.

Will artificial intelligence make life better for humans or lead to our downfall? As developers race toward implementing AI in every aspect of our lives, it is already showing promise in areas like medicine. But what if it is used for nefarious purposes?

In Japan, the inventor and scientist behind the firm Cyberdyne is working to make life better for the sick and elderly. Professor Yoshiyuki Sankai’s robot suits are AI-driven exoskeletons used in rehabilitative medicine to help stroke victims and others learn to walk again. But he doesn’t see the benefits of AI ending there; he predicts a future world where AIs will live in harmony with humans as a new, benevolent species.

Yet in Silicon Valley, the cradle of AI development, there is an unsettling contradiction: a deep uncertainty among many developers about the untamable forces they are unleashing. Gabriel Mukobi is a computer science graduate student at Stanford who is sounding the alarm that AI could push us toward disaster– and even human extinction. He’s at the forefront of a tiny field of researchers swimming against the current to make sure AI is safe and beneficial for everyone.

What are the promises and perils of AI? And who gets to decide how it will be used?

Green tech could help to clean our air, secure our food and protect our cities. An innovative plastic upcycling machine is one promising device made in Taiwan. But can technology really save the planet?

Sometimes it seems like a bad dream: floods, air pollution, traffic jams. Sometimes it feels like we’re surrounded by eco-monsters. But they can be defeated. YouTuber Alex Lin presents state-of-the-art devices. Arthur Zhang builds machines for upcycling plastics. And Japanese researchers are even working on mirrors in space.

DW presents: UNSEEN (Five-part documentary series)
Invisible guests in your food, your hometown sinking, unhealthy dust hiding in your lungs. Discover heroes with amazing solutions – and inspiration for a better life!

Keeping your kids safe from air pollution / UNSEEN (1/5): https://youtu.be/KrsGQpSv5Co
How to avoid microplastics in your food / UNSEEN (2/5): https://youtu.be/acMYHAmNLlE
Fighting the floods: how not to lose your city / UNSEEN (3/5): https://youtu.be/9BTrzAGhy8U
How to cope with traffic jams (without going crazy) / UNSEEN (4/5): https://youtu.be/Hh1Do3PQCWA
How technology makes life easier – and what’s still up to you / UNSEEN (5/5): https://youtu.be/EJi3Vxdyqv0

UNSEEN opens your eyes. We travel through Southeast Asia and discover stories about people whose lives could be yours. In Indonesia, children suffer from air pollution – something doctors, architects and entrepreneurs are fighting with innovative and original concepts. Then we head to Malaysia for an episode in learning how to deal with microplastics in food. We follow a fan of great cuisine on his own personal journey. What’s safe to eat and drink? Which products are good, and which don’t measure up? Next up is Thailand’s capital Bangkok, one of Asia’s sinking cities. Its inhabitants prepare for future floods, adapting their city and seeking tools to make their homes safe. In Vietnam we get caught in gridlock. Nothing new! But this time, we’re stuck with some cool rappers teaching people how not to go crazy in traffic. And finally, in Taiwan, it’s all about green tech. Learn about the hopes and limits of the new technologies being developed to solve life’s challenges. Join us on an exciting trip in five episodes – one that will open your eyes to beastly challenges and promising solutions!

The future of farming: Driverless tractors, drones and robots. How is the agriculture industry changing as digital technology develops?

Unmanned tractors controlled via GPS; drones that kill vermin in the fields from above; and highly efficient bull sperm used to produce genetically optimized calves. This is not science fiction. It’s the future of farming, today. “Smart farming” is the agricultural industry’s new buzzword. A survey of almost 600 German farmers has revealed that more than one in two now uses digital solutions to optimize their harvests. Fierce regional and global competition, declining subsidies, higher standards of food quality, environmental protection, and increasing demand are forcing farmers to be highly efficient. This documentary looks at three examples of “smart farming” in Germany. Breeding consultant Johanna Schendel creates optimized dairy cows by selecting the right bull semen. Asparagus farmer Heiner Bartels uses a smartphone to calculate the optimum time to harvest. And drone pilot Bernd Meyer is out to fight pests in maize fields from the air. All three are trying to use modern technology to modify nature to fit the needs of our society. But where are the limits?

The 2008 financial crisis spread distrust in banks and sped up the acceptance of new kinds of money. Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin now promise to provide transparent, democratic alternatives. Startups in the Philippines are disrupting old structures.

More than 50 million Filipinos are unbanked. FinTech startups are now giving them access to money. With little access to formal banking services, millions in the Philippines can’t save money, take out loans or perform other simple financial transactions. Now FinTech startups are raising levels of financial inclusion. Founders here believe the country is ripe for change, and that cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin will provide the momentum. Blockchain ambassador Lina Seiche, the founder of Blockchats, is working for change through bitcoin and decentralized networks. SCI founder Miguel Cuneta is helping that change along by offering services like bill payment, e-commerce, cashless transactions, and of course, cryptocurrency wallets. He’s enabling people in the unbanked market – like waste-pickers – by helping them participate in the world of digital commerce. Founder David Kath is aiding them as well by eliminating middlemen in the plastic industry with technology that allows waste-pickers to triple incomes. Turned into digital tokens in an e-wallet, plastic has become their money.

Today modern archaeology often works with digital technology. Geophysics has allowed thousands of ancient sites to be located – a huge gain for science.

The dig is no longer the be-all and end-all of archeology. We accompany some archeologists on their journey into the virtual past. Geophysics comprises a range of techniques with various geological and military functions. Geomagnetism is used to locate enemy submarines or potential reserves of oil or other minerals. Now, German and Irish archeologists have teamed up to use it to trace prehistoric grave systems. Researchers in western Germany are applying it to locate ancient procession and pilgrimage routes. Shipping archeologists in Bremerhaven are availing of digital technology to create virtual models of shipwrecks and, in Berlin, archeologists and game designers have also embarked on a joint project. As luck would have it, they scanned every millimeter of a temple in the Syrian city of Aleppo, not suspecting that, soon afterwards, the complex would be largely destroyed in the country’s civil war. Their virtual model is evidence that the study of the past can have uses for the present, just as technologies of the present can help us to study the past.

Society is facing radical changes. Industry 4.0 – the fourth industrial revolution – is the current trend of automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies. Artificial intelligence is constantly gaining ground.

The digital era and the Internet are not just changing industrial production processes. An increasing number of jobless people are facing stiff competition from intelligent machines. One software company owner in the US even says the machines are better designed to do most jobs than people are. And that isn’t just restricted to the car industry. Workers cost money and employers are out to minimize labor costs.

What will that mean? Soon there could be more intelligent robots and machines than humans and they could soon be replacing people in the workplace. Industry 4.0 poses a great challenge to the world as we know it and millions of people could lose out in the process. Find out more in ‘Robitics – Impacting the Workplace’.
